Costs for GLP-1 Medications used for Weight Loss Reduced

Finally, some relief on the cost of GLP-1 medications for people with Medicare

What Is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary program run by Medicare (CMS) that gives eligible Part D members access to certain weight-loss medications at a reduced cost. The program runs from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027 and is available in all 50 states and U.S. territories.

What Does It Cost?

Eligible members pay a flat $50 copay per fill. A few things worth knowing about how that copay works:

  • Your Part D deductible does not apply
  • The $50 does not count toward your out-of-pocket maximum
  • Low-income subsidy (LIS/Extra Help) does not apply to this program
Which Medications Are Covered?

The program currently covers three GLP-1 medications when used specifically for weight loss:

  • Foundayo (all formulations)
  • Wegovy (injection and tablet, all formulations)
  • Zepbound KwikPen only

Note: The single-dose vial and single-dose pen versions of Zepbound are not covered under this program.

Who Qualifies?

The GLP-1 Bridge was designed for Medicare Part D members who are using these medications for weight loss only, not for other conditions.

You do not qualify for the Bridge program if your GLP-1 prescription is for any of the following:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH)

Those conditions are already covered under standard Part D benefits, so if you have one of those diagnoses, you should continue getting your medication through your regular Part D plan.

The Bottom Line

If you are on Medicare Part D and taking a GLP-1 medication solely for weight management, the Bridge program could significantly lower your monthly cost to just $50. If your prescription is tied to a condition like diabetes or sleep apnea, your coverage stays exactly where it is through your Part D plan.
